FUNGI II: EMERGENT PROPERTIES OF LIFE |
MONDAY 17 MARCH
THE SEPARATE HOUR
Concepts and Terms for Dialogue 18: Please access the appropriate
concepts and terms for the taxa covered today through the front page of the
kingdom FUNGI. Any of these terms
could be used in the Game next Monday.
DIALOGUE 18. We will continue to examine the Kingdom
Fungi with the Phylum
Basidiomycota. Furthermore, we will consider concepts such as the
Fungi Imperfecti and the Lichen.
Come prepared to discuss the origin of the fungi, their association with
other Opisthokonts, and their place in the Unikonts.
THE COMMON HOUR
GAME 8. Please come prepared with information from last week. The categories will be TAXONOMY, ANATOMY, PHYLOGENY. As before, much of this information comes from the web site, Holt (2006), The Origin (chapter 8), cultures, slides, and preserved specimens from the last week of class.
WEDNESDAY 19 MARCH
THE SEPARATE HOUR
ACTIVITY 18: Please look at the following cultures, slides, and preserved specimens. Access sheets on the Basidiomycota, Deuteromycota, and Lichens to guide you in your observations.
- Coprinus: living; basidiocarp section slide
- Agaricus: living
- Fomes: dry basidiocarp
- Polyporus: dry basidiocarp
- Phallus: preserved
- Lycoperdon: preserved; dry
- Geastrum: dry
- Puccinia: dry, aecia on barberry leaves, uredinia and telia on wheat leaves; slide sections aecia (barberry leaf x.s.), uredinia (wheat leaf x.s.), telia (wheat leaf x.s.)

- Pennicilium: living
- Arthrobotrys: living
- Lichen thallus x.s. slide
- Demonstrations of Foliose Lichens; Fruticose Lichens; and Crustose Lichens
With the end of the Basidiomycota and Lichens, the next unit on the taxa of the plant supergroup begins. That means you should begin to work on your second project. This project will examine some aspect of character evolution in the Protists and Fungi. You will do this as a note. Go to the syllabus for descriptions of the note and its requirements. Please access the contract for a note and submit it by Friday.
