MONDAY 17 MARCH

THE SEPARATE HOUR

DIALOGUE 18. We will continue to examine the Kingdom Fungi with the Phylum Basidiomycota.  Furthermore, we will consider concepts such as the Fungi Imperfecti and the Lichen.  Come prepared to discuss the origin of the fungi, their association with other Opisthokonts, and their place in the Unikonts.

GAME 8. Please come prepared with information from last week. The categories will be TAXONOMY, ANATOMY, PHYLOGENY.  As before, much of this information comes from the web site, Holt (2006), The Origin (chapter 8), cultures, slides, and preserved specimens from the last week of class.

ACTIVITY 18: Please look at the following cultures, slides, and preserved specimens.  Access sheets on the Basidiomycota, Deuteromycota, and Lichens to guide you in your observations.  
  1. Coprinus: living; basidiocarp section slide
  2. Agaricus: living
  3. Fomes: dry basidiocarp
  4. Polyporus: dry basidiocarp
  5. Phallus: preserved
  6. Lycoperdon: preserved; dry
  7. Geastrum: dry
  8. Puccinia: dry, aecia on barberry leaves, uredinia and telia on wheat leaves; slide sections aecia (barberry leaf x.s.), uredinia (wheat leaf x.s.), telia (wheat leaf x.s.)
  9. Ustilago: preserved; slide (w.m. spores)
  10. Pennicilium: living
  11. Arthrobotrys: living
  12. Lichen thallus x.s. slide
  13. Demonstrations of Foliose Lichens; Fruticose Lichens; and Crustose Lichens

With the end of the Basidiomycota and Lichens, the next unit on the taxa of the plant supergroup begins.  That means you should begin to work on your second project.  This project will examine some aspect of character evolution in the Protists and Fungi.  You will do this as a note.  Go to the syllabus for descriptions of the note and its requirements.  Please access the contract for a note and submit it by Friday.

THE COMMON HOUR

DIALOGUE 19: We will introduce members of the Supergroup Planta with the Kingdom Rhodophytae and cover the phyla Glaucophyta, Cyanidiophyta, and Rhodophyta. Be prepared. Bring the data sheets for these taxa.  Please prepare the following for the dialogue:
