EVOLUTION, PHYLOGENY, AND SYSTEMATICS: THE FOUNDATIONS

MONDAY 14 JANUARY

THE SEPARATE HOUR (NORMALLY, 9-10 FOR W-1 AND 11-12 FOR W-2)

ACTIVITY: You will organize yourselves into teams and prepare answers to questions that will be distributed in class.

THE COMMON HOUR (NORMALLY, 10-11 FOR BOTH SECTIONS)

So that the laboratory complex might accommodate everyone we ask that students enrolled in section W1 sit on the 201 side.  During this hour we will present the format of the course with particular emphasis on the following:

DIALOGUE 1: A history of evolutionary thought.  Be prepared for a quiz at the beginning of the hour.  That will be followed by a dialogue in which you should answer a question, ask a question (that is appropriate to the material), or make a comment (that is appropriate to the material).  You should be familiar with the attached concepts and terms for week 1 for the game on Monday.  Please try to use the terms during the dialogues this week. 

Introduction to evolutionary theory.

THE COMMON HOUR

ACTIVITY 1:  WINTER BIRD COUNT.

Come prepared to be outside for the full hour.  Each team will be assigned a particular part of the campus to survey for bird species.  Use your binoculars and field guides to create a comprehensive list of bird species from your assigned area.  You must also indicate the kind of habitat in which you found each one (e.g. shrub, lawn, tree...).  If you do not know the species, you will have to write down a description that is comprehensive enough to allow you to determine what it was at a later date.  This is due next Wednesday and must be submitted in electronic form in the attached excel sheet.  Name the file after your team name.

ACTIVITY 2: An exercise in cladistics. An Introduction to MacClade.  

You are responsible for knowing the information from week one for the Game on January 22.

The Game (see the description of it in the syllabus/assignments) will include the following:

  1. WHO. This will be a recognition question based on the history of evolutionary thought.
  2. WHAT. This category will include questions that require factual answers.
  3. WHY. This category will include questions about theory.
