PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE GREEN ALGAE

This cladogram based on SSU rRNA sequence comparisons shows a clear separation of the Chlorobionts (here called Chlorophyta) and the Streptophytes.  Note that the Praesenophytes are paraphyletic (labeled Clade I through Clade IV).  The Mesostigmatophyceae (a praesinophyte) appears to be sister to the charophyte+embryophyte clade.  This is Figure 1 from Marin and Melkonian (1999).
