The goals of treatment are to correct malnutrition and the underlying psychological problems. The team approach, which includes cognitive behavioral therapy, nutritional rehabilitation and counseling, aggressive medical management, and individual and family psychotherapy, is most effective. Treatment options depend on the person's weight, cardiac status, and overall health. Eating disorders may be treated in the hospital or on an outpatient basis. Medicines are rarely used to treat these illnesses. However, antidepressants may be used if the person has severe depression.
